Topic:

Mr. Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), a taxpayer advocacy group he founded in 1985 at President Reagan’s request. We believe in a system in which taxes are simpler, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today.  The government's power to control one's life derives from its power to tax.  We believe that power should be minimized.

In the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, candidates and incumbents solemnly bind themselves to oppose any and all tax increases. Senator Mitch McConnell says, "It’s because of soldiers like Grover that the conservative movement is so vibrant today and that the liberals who thought they had taken over two years ago are on the run." Arianna Huffington calls Norquist “The dark wizard of the Right's anti-tax cult" - Reference

Talking Points:

Left
Middle Right

  1. this argument is disconnected from the reality of prior decisions. With the Bush tax cuts in place this has resulted in 2 unfunded wars, unfunded Medicare changes and an unfunded bank bail out. This could cost over $3.5 Trillion.
  2. Norquist has focused on taxes but the reality is this pledge starves our nation of revenue.
  3. This tax pledge is creating a conflict of interest for each signatory. How can a politician negotiate budget decisions without the possibility of adding revenue to the conversation.

1. Norquist has framed this as a need to reduce the power of the government by reducing revenue.
