MTA Website | Occupy Wiki Sites | MTA - End Corporate Person-hood

About this page:

This is a page to help us organize this demonstration. Use the check lists to help make sure we get everything done we need to get done. Don't worry about Occupy San Jose and that this is part of a larger site that they use. I work with Henry, the person who set this site up and introduced me to the whole check list idea. He has invited the community to use the site to help get organized. If we decide it works and want to set up our own Wiki, we can raise the money do to so. Use it and let me know if you need any help.

Overview:

The national Move to Amend movement called for a national day of actions at US courts on second  anniversary of the Supreme Court Citizens United v FEC decision on January 20th, 2012. This decision defined money as speech, and also said that we could not limit a corporation’s right to free speech (limit how much they could contribute to political campaigns).

Corporate personhood has given corporations (fictitious entities) many of the rights of real people (us). Giving these rights to corporations has allowed them to influence and undermine our democracy. The most recent Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. FEC, defined money as speech, and also said that we could not limit a corporation’s right to free speech (limit how much they could contribute to political campaigns).  In their decision they acknowledged that this would give corporations a great advantage over real people because of their vast financial resources in influencing these political campaigns, but this was not important enough to interfere with their First Amendment rights!

Who:

Santa Clara Move to Amend, along with numerous community groups endorsing this action.

What:

On Friday, January 20th at noon, Santa Clara County Move To Amend (MTA) will join with MTA affiliates across the US in a national day of resistance to corporate personhood and the negative impact corporate power has on our democracy.

When:

Friday, January 20th at 12 noon in St. James Park across the street from the Old Courthouse, followed by a march to the Federal District Court at South First and San Carlos Streets, and then a march to Occupy San Jose at San Jose City Hall at South 3rd and Santa Clara Streets

Where:

Our demonstration will take place in St. James Park across from the Old Courthouse, at St. James and N. First Streets. This is where the initial case, Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroadset the stage for the for the Supreme Court “decision” that defined corporations as people in1886. After an initial rally, we will march to the Federal District Court at South First & San Carlos Streets, and then to Occupy San Jose at the San Jose City Hall at 3rd and Santa Clara Streets for a General Assembly and rally.

Why:

To begin the process of mobilizing our local community opposition to overturn the Supreme Court Citizens United v. FEC decision that ruled that money is speech and that corporations have the right to unlimited speech; and to end corporate personhood.

Reporting (Agendas and Minutes):

Maybe it would be good to plan to pre event marches each day where flyers are handed out. Go into other parts of the community to share information.
